Techniques such as newsletters allow you a forum where you can talk at length about your services and specials. They are easy to produce and cost effective. Using the digital way is more effective than print. It is a good way to keep customers informed about your recent specials. They also help generate interest in new destinations and packages that you are offering.
A computer is the only piece of equipment you will need to create a newsletter. You can use office software like Microsoft Office (which includes a number of newsletter templates that you can create to your liking. Add your own creativity and words). There are two kinds of newsletters used by travel professionals. 1) Informational and 2) Hotsheets.
Informational Newsletters
They contain new travel packages and destinations, travel tips, advisories, biographies of the owner and staff if possible. It will also include whatever is of importance to the traveler, like profiles of selected destinations, checklist and quizzes. You can use them for prospecting potential clients. Newsletters inform and touch base with existing clients regularly. This is good especially around peak vacation season.
HotSheets
They are more like an additional edition. They provide “breaking news” about tour operators and airline specials. They talk about in house specials and other time sensitive information. It is best worked through by e-mail.

The fact that you own a travel business makes you an expert in the eyes of someone who does not. Use this information to start publishing articles. You may never have been published before but do not let that stop you! The fact is lots of editors like getting material that is made just for their lifestyles section. They love it when it is unsolicited submission because it is usually free. That is what usually happens when it is promotional and talks about a topic that is relevant. The editors may even fix minor errors,place a headline on it and put it into their lifestyle section. If you are blessed, it may go into the travel section.
This does not mean you can write gibberish and expect an editor to accept your writing. Only if they are minor corrections might they do it. Otherwise, right into the trash it goes. Newsletters, informational articles, how-tos and checklist are always popular with newspapers and magazine editors. Make sure your headline stands out from the rest.
Public Speaking should help you quickly make a name for yourself in the travel industry. Make sure that you leave plenty of business cards at the podium and registration table. By doing this, there is a good chance someone will call you when ready to book their next trip or vacation. Look for organizations that include the type of clients you are looking for. As far as pay is concerned there won’t be much. The amount will be small or nothing at all. This is similar to what you make doing feature articles. The rewards may seem small in the beginning but when the business starts picking up because of your speaking engagements, it will be well worth it.
Check into other entrepreneur start up groups and give your experience testimony on starting up a business. Look into the local libraries for speaking engagements and other groups that are similar to your target market. Lastly, know your audience and give appropriate information and hopefully that will help your advertising.
